Key principles of agile make it an approach well suited to digital transformation:

• User-informed - solution users closely involved in solution development
• Minimum viable product - good enough now beats waiting for perfect
• Responsive and adaptive - try out solutions quickly, alpha and beta test, build on results
• Iterative - use real-world learnings to improve in subsequent rounds

These agile principles are also well suited to ongoing service improvement, therefore it makes sense to introduce them during transformation.

Walk The Talk

Fundamental to digital success is inspiring stakeholders to buy into the digital vision. Therefore, the digital priniciples expected to apply post transformation, e.g. stakeholder engagement and results-based action, should also be applied during transformation.

Digital success relies on continual improvement, because a one-off change achieving a fixed end state cannot be the ultimate solution in a continually evolving world. Nevertheless, it is still possible to deliver sufficient value quickly via intermediate solutions and platforms, which can then be improved incrementally to add more value. However, this relies on stakeholder buy-in to regular, small-scale change, which again requires effective digital leadership, and perhaps cultural adaptation.
